The Democratic Republic of Congo recognizes that there are issues within the United Nations, and wishes for new solutions. Back in 2011, the DRC faced violent acts during the elections between the members of political parties. The United Nations said that 345 violations were committed during the elections, and affected 769 victims, including the death of 41 humans. It’s clear to see that the Democratic Republic of the Congo needs help from the United Nations in order to have safe elections; however, it’s unfortunate to read upon the flaws of the United Nations. The lack of oversight by the United Nations is what concerns the DRC and bribes, kickbacks, and costs need to be stopped in order for the UN to successfully help those countries in need. his concerns the DRC because the instability is related to trafficking in minerals and illegal armed groups are benefiting from it. With the DRC having a lot of natural resources it alarms the country because they need the United National to be aware of those who are trafficking these minerals. What the DRC would like the United Nations to do is promote transparency and provide documentation to those who are buying minerals.
Another issue that was brought up is the crime activity by soldiers who are employed by the United Nations. This concerns the DRC because the instability is related to trafficking in minerals and illegal armed groups are benefiting from it. With the DRC having a lot of natural resources it alarms the country because they need the United National to be aware of those who are trafficking these minerals. An article by the Africa Renewal say that the problem is occurring because the command and discipline of peacekeeping troops is almost controlled completely by the member starts who contribute the troops. This doesn’t give the United Nations the ability to enforce standards of the peacekeepers, which is why it looks like the United Nations ignores sexual abuse. The DRC requested an investigation on the abuses by the peacekeepers. The DRC would like to see the United Nations gain more power so that they are able to have more power and debate resolutions within the UN so that stronger regulations are made.
