Accountability at the United Nations is something that can always be improved. The two major issues are implementing the decisions the United Nations make and the UN peacekeeping soldiers. The current implementation process has many flaws and needs to have a major reform. The issue of the UN peacekeeping soldiers breaking laws in various countries all over the world needs to be addressed and fixed as quickly as possible.
Guatemala has had a good experience, in the past, with UN peacekeeping troops. The UN helped end a thirty six year conflict in Guatemala between the Government and various insurgent groups in Guatemala. Guatemala would like to improve the issue of UN peacekeeping troops all over the world. UN troops helped Guatemala during our Civil War so it is important to improve the UN peacekeeping troops as much as possible. As for accountability at the UN, Guatemala believes it needs to improve. Guatemala is open to any type of improvement at the UN, as long as it is a well developed plan that has a high chance of success of working.
To improve UN peacekeeping troops, there must be strict code of conduct set for all troops. If any criminal activity, big or small, is discovered, the troop must be discharged immediately. Guatemala will work with countries that helped fight for the Guatemalan government during the Civil War, such as, the United States, Taiwan, Argentina, and Chile. We may also work with Russia, a current ally. To improve accountability at the UN, every country must work together to find a better process of implementation. A possible solution could be having a group of randomly picked countries to implement any type of plan.
