For millennia, sectarian conflicts have resulted in devastation, affecting the entire world. Not only do these struggles affect countries where they occur, but also, various nations that are pulled into the problem. Sectarian conflicts can last ages, building stiff tensions amongst groups within a nation. Sectarianism is often a major problem in developing countries, especially where one religious group is favored by the governing body. As religiously split countries enter the modern world, it is the UN’s goal to educate these nations on democracy and equality.
As a member of the European Union, Denmark strongly supports peaceful negotiation in order to resolve any conflict. When a governing body refuses to recognize a religious group, it is often a place where a sectarian conflict will erupt. Denmark believes that a government should be supportive of all religious bodies and open to ways in which they can represent each group accordingly.
Today, one of the most prevalent Sectarian conflicts occurs within the Islamic Nation. Religious differences have caused tensions amongst many middle eastern countries, resulting in the creation of terrorist groups, such as ISIL. ISIL resorts to radical methods in order to capture public attention. The United Nations has attempted to solve this problem many times, but has found it difficult to pinpoint the main issue of the conflict.
Although national sovereignty will come up in this topic, it requires the participation and willingness of all nations to create a lasting political solution. Denmark would like to resolve this problem by promoting peaceful negotiations amongst government and religious groups. It is the duty of the SPECPOL committee to take into considerations all of these factors and work together in order to create a lasting resolution to the issue.
