Lithuania being a country that is economically, socially and politically stable believes that urban development helps improve an economic situation of a country since foreign investment culminates in overall improvement. It is worth noting that with development come new demands that the population requires and we must address that matter.
Positioning
Lithuania is anticipating ideas to stop problems as in sustainability and urban development in cities that are growing at an incredible pace. Taking into account that inhabitants will have access to water, energy, clean air, etc. using cleaner natural resources and fewer pollutants, or in other words, eco-friendly improvement can be achieved along with economic development so these two concepts can be done one along with the other.
Solutions
Regarding the solutions my country has, we must have ideas so that they can make an impact for sustainable development of the 21st century.
My country is encouraging the use of BRT or Bus Rapid Transit in urban areas. This is not only a low cost effective solution since it's approximately 1/3 of the cost of a Light Rail system; it also allows cities to improve the overall appearance of the streets where this is implemented. Since there are dedicated bus lanes and dedicated stations.
For developing countries (BRICS, Mexico and Argentina just to name a few examples) should encourage good planning of the cities since they are soon to become the most important in the world in terms of population and economic importance (Sao Paulo, Guangzhou, Mexico City). One example is the fact that the cities that are growing at an incredible rate in Mexico, they're implementing a good planning and have a balance between the construction done, population increase and the infrastructure.
Songdo, South Korea which is a smart city that focuses on sustainable development is a clear example of how urban development can be achieved without forgetting the environment and therefore we envision this to become an important example for further development of such cities in developing nations worldwide.
Closing
Lithuania is aware as all other countries in the committee that with increasing population and development to fit the needs of these, we have to take action for a correct way of planning. My country is committed to eco-friendly city growth and economic development to have a better regulation of our growing international metropolis.
