Urban areas promote communication, diversity, education, access, and economic improvement. However urbanization also contributes to environmental destruction as well as temperature increases, air pollution, and variation in the water cycle causing epidemic outbreaks. 89% of Venezuela’s total population lives in urban areas and Venezuela would like to maintain the highest standard of living possible for these citizens.
Venezuela supports action promoting campaigns combatting these detrimental environmental impacts. Venezuela believes that we should try to prevent further water pollution in urban areas by suggesting the enactment by countries of regulations concerning the disposal of waste outside of the vicinity of public water sources. The sanitation of these water sources is key to the health of people living in the cities as well as that of the people living downstream from these water sources and that of the animal and plants surrounding of the aquatic ecosystem. Venezuela also believes the United Nations should encourage the promotion and adaptation of public transportation to increase convenience and availability for citizens. Many urban areas have public transportation systems that are bogged down by the dense populations in cities. These systems have proven to be inefficient and they limit the citizens that live in urban areas who rely on public transportation. The dependency on public transportation in urban areas, which is caused by the lack of other forms of commuting in very densely populated areas, requires this issue to be addressed. The new transportation systems would allow population to distribute itself which would improve health conditions as well as lower the concentrated impact of foot traffic and other human effects that harm the environment.
