Piracy is defined as the assault of or highjacking of another ship at sea. Narrow channels form predictable spots of high amounts of piracy, such as the Gulf of Aden near Somalia. However Piracy is not only contained to this area and a large portion of the world’s countries deal with piracy in one way or another. Piracy weighs shipping companies with the additional cost combating piracy. Defending against piracy isn’t free for example, some crews of guards cost $5,000 a day. Redirecting routes and running ships at increased speeds also contribute to the high cost of piracy. Piracy is costly and puts the lives of men and women in danger and must be dealt with.
The country of Belgium realizes that piracy is a costly and dangerous activity that should be dealt with. Belgium has had to deal with piracy in the past in the form of hijacked cargo ships and the arrest of high profile pirates. Belgium recognizes that even that piracy is on the decline around the world it impedes the ability of countries to safely trade with other countries across the sea. Cooperation of countries in areas of high risk of piracy is important to combat piracy.
Belgium wishes to reduce the risk of piracy and to cooperate with countries to further reduce the effects of piracy. Belgium not only wishes to improve the safety of overseas trade for Belgium ships but for all countries and continue to promote a safe world for the current and future generations.
