Piracy has been a problem for centuries in the international community. Although the U.N. has taken numerous steps to stop it by passing resolutions to combat this issue, it remains as concern today. The main issue with piracy, besides the immediate threat to human life, is the disruption of international trade and travel however; it also jeopardizes the safety of the people aboard the vessel. Pirates are now targeting vessels containing resources like oil no longer restricting themselves to small personal craft and this poses a serious risk to maritime trade.
Piracy is a problem that Slovakia believes needs to be stopped. Even though Slovakia is not directly affected by piracy as it is a landlocked country with no territorial islands, no shipping industry and no naval force. The Slovakian economy is impacted by increased prices of resources that are transported by shipping vessels and, as a member of the E.U., it is concerned about the direct impact of piracy on its fellow members. Slovakia is committed to cooperating with international efforts in combatting piracy. This cooperation must include the countries more directly affected by piracy as well as the countries where any anti-pirate operations would take place.
Slovakia will support proposals and resolutions by the E.U. and will firmly stand by proposals and resolutions presented by the Visegrad group. Although we understand that this problem should be solved efficiently, we reiterate the Committee should respect the opinions and include the countries in the solution that are directly affected by piracy.
