Piracy is a growing issue in many areas around the world. The Indian Ocean, East Africa, the South China Sea, South America, and the Caribbean are some of the areas where piracy is greatest in number and severity. The United Nations has passed multiple resolutions regarding piracy already, some of them regarding specific problem areas like Somalia.
In response to the problem of piracy Sweden has sent ships to patrol the waters off the coast of East Africa. Sweden has done so in collaboration with others countries, such as Britain and France, who have also sent ships to this region. These efforts have shown to work well as piracy originating from somalia has declined significantly over the past few years.
Sweden would like to see the further decline of piracy, especially in some of the more neglected regions like the Caribbean. Sweden would like to see a resolutions passed by the United Nations Security Council that further increase the number of patrol ships required in the waters of the regions mentioned above, in an effort to further the decline of piracy attacks in these regions.
Sweden expects that countries from the European Union, The United States, France, and Britain, as well as others will support the creation of these resolutions. Sweden believes this because these countries have already aided in the effort against piracy originating from Somalia.
Sweden expects China, Vietnam, and Libya to oppose these type of resolutions as they have opposed these anti-piracy resolutions in the past on the premise of a confliction sovereignty infringement.
