Greece is very excited to participate in this United Nations Human Rights Council discussion on the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Policies and laws regarding discrimination against the LGBT community have become more and more pressing in recent years, not only for Greece, but in nations all over the world.
Currently in Greece, Homosexual activity in general is legalized. However same sex marriage is unrecognized by the law, and only opposite sex marriage is officially recognized. LGBT discrimination is illegal in some contexts however it is not illegal if it is done within the public domain. For example the Orthodox Church could discriminate against someone who was a part of the LGBT community. The Republic of Greece would like to work with other nations toward the recognition and the legalization of same sex marriage. Greece accepts that an increase in openness to the LGBT community is an important aspect in respect of human rights. Greece would like to improve its relationship with the transgender community as well. In the past, the relationship between Greece and transgender community has been difficult and needs to be better. Greece and other nations need to clarify their laws on changing the legal definition of gender of anyone who chooses to do so, and to make sure that option is open to all. Greece believes there must recognition of the legal age of consent for homosexual people and for heterosexual people. Greece seeks to work with nations within the Human Rights Council to improve the status of the LGBT community worldwide.
