With an estimated 4.5 million projected infant deaths alone in 2015, infant mortality is a tremendous problem. Reducing mortality in infants is important in the reduction of widespread poverty. It is not only important to reduce the rate of deaths, but also to educate and have proper health care access to expecting mothers. Educating women on childbirth and pre- and postnatal care is tremendously important if the global community wants to find a solution to this problem. Education on the matter is half the battle, along with support for these expecting mothers. A resolution for all countries, not just developing countries, needs to be found if there is going to be a reduction in infant deaths. This isn’t just an issue for third-world countries, but for all, and global cooperation needs to occur for a solution to be found.
Colombia has struggles with infant mortality rates. The country is in the process of revitalizing their health care program, and is struggling to find an answer to the problem. Despite having widespread access to health care for a majority of the citizens, having trained professionals reachable to the remote locations is still a problem. Having this accessible to those people would greatly help Colombian citizens, but not the sole answer to the problem. Other measures, like educating young mothers on pre- and postnatal care, need implementation in Colombia, and other countries around the globe. Having programs to educate and provide assistance to mothers and their children is a possible solution to combat infant mortality rates across the globe. Colombia believes that efforts from health organizations like WHO or UNICEF to assist with the problem is important to the issue at hand.
Colombia suggests an increase in medical professionals to remote areas of the country, education and support for expecting and/or new mothers to be included in the solution. Colombia believes that those components are vital in finding the answer. In order to decrease this growing problem, cooperation from global participants is needed. Colombia looks forward to sharing these ideas with other delegates to help combat this problem.
