Xenophobia and racism have not disappeared, even though it has been highly combatted over the years. Hate crimes against different races still occur all over the world. These concepts support one race being better or more successful than the other, which is not acceptable in the country of Uruguay.
Uruguay strongly opposes xenophobia and racism. Uruguay believes in “peace and harmony among the population and people of all races, all beliefs and orientations” (Mercader), to make a bright today and an even brighter tomorrow. Uruguay has very respectable immigration laws and welcomes all new citizens, as well as visitors from all different countries. Even though the majority of the population in Uruguay is Roman Catholic, many papers have been signed for religious freedom and the freedom to express religion, including the Uruguay 2014 International Religious Freedom Report. Uruguay has worked hard over the years to fully integrate and centralize all minorities into national life to have a fully functioning and respectful country, since the people of Uruguay have the right to express themselves and their specific cultures, which is written in the constitution. Although the majority of Uruguay is white, minorities are continually entering the country. The goal of Uruguay is to have complete acceptance of all new races entering the country and elimination of all xenophobia and racism between them. For example, Uruguay has been working to integrate Afro-Uruguayans into bureaucratic and educational sectors of life to give them better opportunities. Hate crimes have been and are still being combatted to have the safest country possible. Uruguay hopes that other countries fight against xenophobia and racism as they continue to do so.
