Nuclear weapons have had a devastating effect since 1945 when the US tested its first nuclear bomb. The United Nations have sought to eliminate such weapons ever since its establishment. The creation of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in 1968 has had a huge positive impact on the countries involved. There have been many treaties to work on preventing nuclear proliferation, testing and promoting progress in nuclear disarmament. Chile's position on the emerging nuclear issue is that it should be brought to attention and that testing, usage, and stockpiling of nuclear weapons should be stopped but Chile supports the right of all parties development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Chile has worked to eliminate nuclear weapons not just from its own country but also from others.
The main treaties Chile has signed are the NPT since 1995 and Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which was signed in 1996 but has yet to enter into force. Chile is a Non-Nuclear Weapon State (NNWS). Chile does not possess any nuclear weapons and is part of the 65 nation Conference on Disarmament (CD). In 2010 Chile removed all of its highly enriched uranium from storage and turned it over to the United States for safekeeping. The threat of nuclear terrorism confirms the need to ensure that nuclear weapons are not transferred which is why Chile finds the implementation of article I of the NPT as essential and imperative.
In the upcoming conference Chile will urge India, Israel, and Pakistan to comply with the NPT and will also call on North Korea to return to it after it pulled away in. A review and reporting process is particularly important and Chile recommends that all nuclear weapons states “regularly report on measures taken to lower the operational readiness of their nuclear weapons systems.” The NPT has done a lot of work for creating a safer world. To conclude Chile has worked hard to make it’s country safe from nuclear weapons. Chile recommends the United Nations work to have every country join and follow the NPT and gather all nuclear weapons that are not being used for peaceful purposes and dispose or contain them.
