Nuclear energy and weaponry made its first entrance in the world, in World War II in what's been called the Manhattan Project. We saw the power of nuclear such power in Hiroshima.
The Republic of Cyprus condemns the use and testing of nuclear power and weapons. While the NPT has decreased the number of nuclear warheads and weaponry, Cyprus believes that while nuclear energy exists, there will be temptation to make, test and use nuclear weaponry.
Cyprus feels other countries should recognize the dangers that come with the use and production of nuclear energy. An example of the dangers the comes with nuclear energy is the meltdown of Chernobyl and the after affects it had on the surrounding area. On April 18th, 1986, the nuclear power plant had a meltdown resulting in a steam explosion that irradiated the surrounding area making it uninhabitable. It is still uninhabitable and will be for some time.
It is disasters like this that unease the country of Cyprus. Cyprus believes that there are different and better ways of producing energy for a country and its needs. Cyprus supports Germany in their goal to use less nuclear energy and even to one day switch to a new energy.
The use of nuclear energy and weaponry is a dangerous issue and should be thought through carefully and dealt with accordingly. The Republic of Cyprus is looking forward to a chance to discuss such an important issue at greater length and is ready and willing to work towards a solution.
