The rapid development of nuclear weapons and frameworks for nuclear energy has been a relevant concern for a relatively long period of time. As a member of the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and a leader in the effort to establish a Zone Free of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDFZ) in the Middle East, Egypt views those nations that still have yet to commit to the NPT- and those still participating in the buildup of Nuclear Weapons- as counter to the peaceful cooperation of the International Community. Still respecting the national sovereignty of those nations, we strongly recommend they sign the NPT. Our world has entered a new nuclear age and the threat of Nuclear Weapons is still present, largely due to regional instability- we must establish disarmament of the international community in order to achieve global security. At the same time, it cannot be denied that a Nuclear Energy based program has immense potential, especially in the position to be utilized for agriculture and technology, as well as their potential to boost the economy and infrastructure of a nation. Egypt is currently working on producing a peaceful nuclear programme/power facility, with a relatively sophisticated civil nuclear program while still in the research and development phase, Egypt urges other nations to follow suit and establish their own programs, providing they have the means to keep the environmental effects in check, and any other dangers that may come with developing nuclear programs.
One of the most vital questions to be posed is that of how the International Community will try to achieve the peaceful cooperation of those states still in power of nuclear weapons, and those not having signed the NPT. We cannot remain inactive, and must adapt to the changing threats and security risks that require our response. The need for Nuclear Weapons often arises from the need for the respect and fear of other nations. Thus, global safety can only be guaranteed if all parties agree to the NPT, which in turn can only be sustainable if all recognize that their adversaries interests must be respected, even those who no longer have the threat of Nuclear Weapons to prove their legitimacy. The Egyptian delegation also strongly favors a resolution that encourages more developed nations to spur the spread of nuclear energy programs/help developing countries develop their own programs, and recommends all nations to take up such programs, which in turn would lead to various benefits, among which are economic and environmental ones. Egypt will continue to research and develop plans, as well as continue operating its two research reactors for this purpose. Funding programs as such should be decided upon in committee.
The Delegation of Egypt looks forwards to forming a resolution that will address all of it’s listed concerns, and hopefully work to resolve them, and will address more details around it’s plan for the development of Nuclear energy programs and nuclear disarmament in committee.
