Nuclear energy is a new and dangerous technology. Many countries are beginning to pursue nuclear energy as a new, efficient energy source, however, nuclear energy must be approached with great caution. Nuclear energy have the greatest potential loss of life associated with them, and nuclear technology can also be used to produce weapons of mass destruction. This issue is important as the energy requirements of all countries are only increasing with time, and nuclear energy needs to be taken into consideration to be allowed, or restricted.
Greece believes that the initial cost of infrastructure required for a reliance on nuclear energy and its danger to life is too much of a risk to invest in. Our Greek Atomic Energy Commission has decided to not enact any programs to use nuclear generation of electricity. Furthermore, Greece believes that other countries should follow in its footsteps, as many developing countries will also not have to funds for a sustainable nuclear energy program, and the proliferation of nuclear technology is not a desirable outcome.
It follows that Greece proposes a restriction of any nuclear energy programs in any country deemed to not be stable enough, have a strong enough economy, or have a propensity for aggression. The Special Political Committee should take this into consideration as nuclear weapons are the most dangerous weapons known to man. Even disregarding nuclear weapons, the risk of a nuclear reactor failing is catastrophic and can lead to the loss of millions of lives. Only countries which are developed enough to sustain and recoup the potential losses caused by a nuclear program should be allowed to enact any.
