The power and devastation of nuclear weapons was first witnessed in 1945 when the United States ended world war II with Two nuclear strikes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Throughout the years after the nuclear bombing of japan Nuclear States have emerged and Nuclear weapons have been stockpiled. In 1970 in attempt to disarm Nuclear States the NPT was created to disarm states and focus on clean uses for nuclear power.

Liberia stands with efforts to disarm Nuclear states and shows this support with its ratification of the CTBT or the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty is a multilateral treaty that bans all nuclear explosions, for both civilian and military purposes, in all environments. It has shown its support for the Treaty by participating in a number of workshops organized by the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBTO), including the Cross-Regional Workshop for CTBTO International Cooperation in Turkey in July 2008. Liberia also shows its support for disarming by signing the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, The African Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Treaty is a treaty that will not allow any country in the african union to obtain a nuclear weapon.
Liberia believes that it is the right of a country to create a nuclear power program for their country if the country can support it. This entails the capability of dealing with nuclear waste without harming the environment as it would eliminate all environmental gains from using nuclear power.
Solutions and why should the committee consider these solutions (1-3)
Liberia would suggest to follow in the its foot steps and continue its aim for a world free of nuclear weapons. Solutions are to follow current disarmament efforts. Such Disarmament efforts include the Npt, the problem existing as of now with the Npt is that many states are not recognized as nuclear so the Npt will not pertain until it recognizes them as a nuclear state. So the first solution is to identify more states as nuclear states and have them join the Npt so we can reliably count on said states to disarm.
As far as the Growing the demand in nuclear power is concerned their needs to be a criteria and guidelines that a state has to pass in order to prove that the country is stable enough to handle the responsibility and maintenance of a nuclear power system before proceeding.
