Malaysia wishes for the good of all nations with respects to the upcoming technological issue of developing nations growing into the nuclear age. Malaysia is a member of the IAEA or the International Atomic Energy Agency and believes that it along with other small nations can greatly benefit from the rise in technology that this group brings. The Malaysian government has already been thanked for our efforts to increase education into nuclear studies by inviting students to visit our Puspati research reactor to learn about nuclear security. Malaysia stresses the importance of protecting nuclear materials from theft and misuse by terror organizations and wishes that all nations worldwide follow its example. Malaysia also wishes for support from other nations in building a strong infrastructure towards viable nuclear power plants to provide much cleaner energy for its people. We do have one research reactor but it does not have the capability to provide widespread power, only to provide opportunities to research radiations studies and application. All emerging nuclear states should become members of the IAEA and as a matter of principle in ensuring that the growth of a nuclear program is wholly energy based should sign onto the NPT or Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
On the topic of our changing global nuclear framework, Malaysia believes that all nations must be a part of the NPT and the IAEA. If we are held to such a high standard that we must change all our legislature on the subject, then all nations no matter the size should be working towards these changes in the exact same way. We call upon the larger nations in this council to back us in saying that for the good of all nations, the nuclear capable nations that have not signed the NPT should be encouraged to do so. We as non-nuclear weapon states have agreed not to work towards this state of being and yet the United Nations does nothing to those that simply refuse to sign yet stay influential in this international body.
