783 million people do not have access to potable water worldwide. In Saudi Arabia, there is not much rainfall, and there is no permanent fresh water source. Our sources of water include surface water, groundwater, desalination, and reclaimed water. Our groundwater will most likely run out within the next 13 years, and desalination is extremely energy intensive. So, the question is, what should we do about this? It is clear that something needs to be done, and fast. We need to find ways to help countries, like Saudi Arabia, who do not have the access that others do.
We believe that looking to the root of the problem is what is going to help us find a solution to this very troubling topic. Here are some of the causes: Overuse of water, pollution of water, geography, drought, and influx in population. We believe that if we look at these problems, then we will be able to fully understand how to fix the issue of access to potable water.
Something that Saudi Arabia implores to be considered, is not necessarily how to get more potable water, but the distribution of potable water, and how that is handled. Another thing that we think could be done is to educate about the water crisis, and to teach people how to better conserve water. We also need to look at the other ways in which we can transport potable water, and get it to the places that it is needed most.
Saudi Arabia believes that we can really make a difference. We hope that we can all come together to make a comprehensive resolution that takes a step in the right direction. We are really excited to work with the fellow delegates and the chairs.
