The Demorcatic Republic of the Congo is home to 10% of the world’s tropical rainforests. 55% of the country is rain forest, second behind Brazil. The Democratic Republic of the Congo also includes the Congo River which is as powerful and dangerous as the Amazon which contains 13% of the world's hydroelectric potential. With being so rich in biodiversity and economic potential, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is is firmly committed to strive for ecologically sound development in harmony. The DRC believes that sustainable development can be achieved through democracy and governance.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Tshibanda stated, “we are committed to making responsible sacrifices without compromising our development. From this perspective, we have devised and submitted an Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) containing focused mitigation measures in four priority sectors—agriculture, forestry, energy and transport.” He also said that as part of this contribution, the DRC has set a goal to “reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent, or the equivalent of 77 million tons by 2030.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo plans to support the Sustainable Development Goals of 2030 which find a universal need for development that works for all people. The 17 goals consist of ensuring access to water and sanitation for all, promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, ensuring access to affordable sustainable and modern energy for all, taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. In addition, on April 22, 2016, they signed the Paris Agreement which further reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
The DRC would like to make a resolution that will improve the management of its natural resources and the profits arising from these by committing to a green economy along with reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
