The delegation of Uruguay believes that the current situation in Burundi is one of drastic importance, and one that desperately needs to be taken into consideration by the Security Council. The political instability in the government affects both those in and around the nation. Uruguay disapproves of the unlawful behavior of Burundi’s government officials, and the continuous violence perpetuated by the oppression of its citizens. The clash between military forces and protesters in the region has encouraged the formation of armed militias, and incited chaos and crime throughout the country.
In order to provide an effective form of action in the region, the United Nations must invest in NGOs and economic incentives to help deescalate these acts of violence, and provide aid to those who are affected by the conflicts. By utilizing the United Nations World Food Programme and similar NGOs in the region, the UN can implement economic sanctions on the nation without drastically harming its citizens. Our goal in Burundi should be to encourage the reformation of a peaceful, democratic government that acts in the best interest of its citizens without creating further violence. With respect to Burundi’s national sovereignty, there are a multitude of actions that the UN can take without using armed forces.
Being able to address the situation in Burundi in a largely peaceful manner is our priority as the United Nations. Without inciting further violence in the region, we must take steps to prioritize the safety of Burundi’s citizens while also discouraging the violent actions committed by the government. The delegation of Uruguay believes that the most reliable course of action is to put our focus into the de-escalation of conflict and the providing of aid to those in need. Uruguay looks forward to working with the Security Council to take action into peacefully addressing this situation.
