The delegation from the Republic of Senegal is of the opinion that the role of the United Nations should be most deeply involved in the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. While both the crises of the Syrian civil war and the rise of ISIL are some of the largest humanitarian dilemmas of the past century, the United Nations is very limited in their ability to affect these conflicts. Opposing sides, conflicts of interest, and ongoing involvement of individual nations in the region allow for nearly no change to be effected, and it is for these reasons I believe the upcoming conference should be most strongly invested in the Yemeni humanitarian crisis. The number of those in the nation requiring aid is 21.2 million- a shocking number in itself even before one understands that this amounts to over 80 percent of the population of the entire region. Even now, with those in dire need of assistance from foreign benefactors (and many not receiving it) making of the majority of the country, the number of those affected by the conflict only continues to grow. It is projected that within two years this number will surpass 90%, as the conflict within the nation grows only greater and the malicious intents of its neighbors grows only greater. It seems that, should we fail to take action, we will soon have a second consecutive refugee crisis- this time into a international climate that is much more hostile towards refugee populations. At this time, it seems there is no clear solution in sight, and only the collaboration and cooperation of the major powers of this world will allow for a positive outcome. I hope that rather than waste our limited time writing instant-veto proposals, we can come together to make the greatest possible changes to the reason–– saving millions of lives in the process.
