Guyana has never made it to a World Cup, but the country has hosted the Cricket World Cup in 2007. The new 15,000-seat Providence Stadium, also referred to as Guyana National Stadium, was built in time for the World Cup and was ready for the beginning of play on March 28. The area around the stadium is subject to development of course, but if games are no longer hosted there, development will be hard to continue. Guyana needs more games including Cricket and football to be hosted. Guyana has never qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup or the FIFA World Cup. At this point it is not foreseeable that Guyana will host another championship.
Furthering interest in these events could lead to more economic activity within the country. But the problems within the Guyana football teams from 2012 to 2014 took the team off of the international roster for that period, and the country began to lose interest. As a country, Guyana needs to solve the internal problems of sports teams and look towards a better future before we can use it as a solid development engine. With interest held high, our country can begin to help the 11% of citizens that live below the poverty line. We will not hide our poverty stricken people away, because it is a national issue that is very important to us.
In conclusion, Guyana would love to have more opportunity in the global sporting culture, but the internal issues and the inability for us to qualify for the World Cup makes the issue out of our reach.
