Major sports events such as the Olympics and the World Cup are amazing opportunities for countries to set aside their differences and come together as one whole. And although the expenses for these events are strenuous, we as a country believe that it is almost a necessity to use these events for opportunity. Singapore hopes that countries such as Brazil are able to power through their economic struggles and remain firm believers in these amazing international events.
Multiple questions that need to be addressed about this issue include how can advertisers adjust price to potentially minimize the financial debt left behind from these events? What negotiations need to happen to help other countries reach a mutual understanding for these events and to potentially make them candidates for hosts in the future?
Singapore brings up good resolutions to these questions including finding brands to advertise that are willing to negotiate the cost for advertising, and also to discuss with other countries on the reasons why hosting these events can be overall culturally and hopefully financially beneficial.
Singapore has found that from Transparency International, the global coalition against corruption, “Risks include the use of bribery and corruption in securing sponsorship…” Singapore wants to work to eliminate this from occurring so that countries may be able to safely and fairly use sponsorships and pay of the financial debt of hosting events such as the Olympics and the World Cup. Singapore has also found from America’s Society and Council of the America’s that “Mega events can accelerate the process of planning for and and executing much-needed public investment. Reasons such as this given are ones we wish to share with other countries to eventually reach a mutual agreement on how to go about solving this issue.
In conclusion, events such as the Olympics and the World Cup bring the world closer together, and it is unfortunate that monetary expenses make countries and their people resent hosting these events. Singapore wishes to seek out ways to fairly find sponsorships to pay off debt and reason with other countries on why it is beneficial to have these events and why it is beneficial for all countries to be able to host them. Overall, Singapore looks forward to this upcoming conference and is eager to discuss the issues presented with all delegates.
