Since 2012, the UK has hosted and organized over 70 mayor sporting events including the 2012 London games. Over that period of time, the sport’s industry contributes close to 40 billion pounds to the country’s economy every year. Sports are definitely a big part of the United Kingdom’s future not only in an economical fashion but in many other aspects as well.
In 2015 the Prime Minister Cameron and the minister of sports released a document which outlines the country’s ´plan towards sports as a whole. This plan looks to “redefine what success looks like in sport by concentrating on five key outcomes: physical wellbeing, mental wellbeing, individual development, social and community development and economic development”. While also outlining the importance of non- Olympic sports and events.
Three main type of actions were mentioned in order to obtain the desired results, Actions that meet the needs of the elite and professional system and deliver successful major sporting events, Actions that meet the needs of the customer and enable them to engage in sport and physical activity, Actions that strengthen the sport sector and make it more effective and resilient.
As many of you may see, sports are no longer just an entertainment business, we live in the 21st century and it has become a very important tool for development, sports are able to contribute millions of dollars to an economy each year, not to mention the physical well being that we obtain from it. The united kingdom if fully on board of using Global Sport as an Engine for Development. That being said, the UK is aware that many countries will struggle to keep up with the demands that their population may bring as to the demand of sports, their economy may not be well structures or simply lack the experience of carrying out such big endeavors. Many of the last Olympic Games and soccer world cups have been devastating for their respective countries’ economies, with the initial budget escalating to immeasurable heights leaving no income at all for the country. That is why the UK is offering any other countries the means and advice to make full use of sports as an engine for development.
