The Israeli-Palestinian conflict was sparked by the upwelling of nationalism amongst the Zionists and Palestinians. The region has suffered multiple wars and attacks that have stemmed from the ratification of UN General Assembly Resolution 181 and have continued to the present day. Both Palestinians and Israelis are able to trace their roots to the region. Thus, each group feels an inarguable right to the land, Jerusalem in particular. Due to its historical and religious importance, it is crucial that it retains its status as an international zone. The Lao People’s Democratic Republic recognizes the complexity of this situation and believes that the nature of this dissension is due wholly to national identity and borders.
The nation of Laos is sympathetic towards those affected by the conflict. Information from the Human Rights Watch affirms the enactment of Israeli policies that control many aspects of the daily lives of Palestinians who reside under Israeli control. These policies often have no conceivable security justification. Cessation of discriminatory practices and biased laws may result in a long-term solution to the situation. Furthermore, Lao PDR strongly supports the proposal of a two-state solution as proffered in the Oslo Accords.
As a proletariat-centric republic, Lao PDR takes umbrage at any loss of life or property presented to innocent people. His Excellency Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR asserted at the 69th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, “We join the international community in urging all parties concerned to resolve the issue of Palestine in an urgent manner based on the principle of creating two independent states of Palestine and Israel living side by side in peace.” However, mutual-recognition is the sine qua non to begin the process of the two-state solution as per the requirements listed in the Oslo Accords. Israel must terminate its continued violation of international humanitarian law by relocating their citizens that occupy West Bank. They must also recognize the State of Palestine’s sovereignty. Lao PDR is anticipating a cooperative effort to create a peaceful and prosperous resolution to this discord.
