The situation in Israel and Palestine is was one the longest in history, and has resulted in thousands upon thousands of deaths on both sides. Recently, we recognized 100 years of the Balfour Declaration, which saw Great Britain granting Israel an official homeland. Palestine, however, looked upon the declaration with heavy disgust, and conflict between the two countries has been present ever since.
While Mexico is in favor of a two-state resolution, it seems unlikely that this could be a possibility. Faced with new challenges, Mexico is known for usually voting with Arab countries, and has had past relations with Palestine. There have been multiple times where Mexico has jumped to criticize Israel’s army’s actions Palestine’s people. Recently, however, Mexico’s support may shift from its usual stance to now support Israel.
In October of 2016, the UNESCO voted on the Jerusalem Resolution, which would ignore any reference of Jewish ties to the Temple Mount. Originally, Mexico would abstain from the vote, but then called for a revote to in order to vote no and support Israel. Israel has commented that it is a “great Israel achievement” that Mexico has decided to change its vote in order to show Israel support.
In the end, this committee is meant to come together to find a solution that appeases the masses. While Mexico can be expected to show more support to Israel, we can not ignore our ties to Palestine and other Arab countries, and are ready and willing to work together with both sides to find a resolution.
