In recent times, too many African nations have been brought low by hunger, disease and war. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is not an exception. Its entire history is permeated with this plague of violence that has engulfed Africa, sometimes from within, but often from without. Despite peacekeeping action by the United Nations the Congo remains a dangerous place. Reports of current crimes are nothing short of horrifying. Tales of violence, sexual abuse, humiliation and other heinous crimes constantly emerge from the Congo, and yet the government of the DRC, and the United Nations have not put a stop to it.
The plight of the people of the Congo is a stain upon all of humanity. All nations of the world should do their utmost to bring an end to this depravity. The government of the DRC must do all in its power to stop the violence as well, and it must become stable enough to do so without fear of a being toppled. If the government itself cannot do that, the United Nations must either bolster the government, or find a way to end the violence itself.
The African Union should be the body the UN should work through, but only with the agreement and invitation of DRC. The ability to be free from violence is central to a government’s duties. Indonesia believes that the governments of other nations should not let human life be so grossly violated.
