The Democratic Republic of Congo is on its way to becoming a peaceful nation. Their first step to doing this was their first multiparty election in 46 years. This election was a major success for this developing nation, and in order to keep it a success they need the help of the international community.
There have been some serious clashes between civilians, rioters, and authorities in the last year over these elections. There is no excuse for these skirmishes, and they must be stopped. These conflicts are just over difference of opinion and they should never end in death. The authorities have killed over these conflicts, and they aren’t being justly prosecuted for these murders. We must end these conflicts now.
We are not condoning either side, because both cause problems. After these elections some rioters started burning ballots. Qatar is strongly for a peaceful situation in DR Congo, and feels this must be accomplished soon.
In order to create this type of situation in DR Congo we must support the Congolese government in their efforts to disestablish terrorist organizations. These groups must be disarmed immediately to prevent the destruction of peace in this nation. In order to do this all nations in this organization must give their support to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Qatar believes we must extend resolution 1234, and the resolutions following it, at least another six months. This would allow the Congolese government to accomplish more of its goals, such as the democratization of its nation.
