Canada expresses a grave concern regarding Russia’s recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. This violates Georgia’s Independence, and breaks the six-point peace plan agreed upon by President Nicolas Sarkozy. Peace is the main objective of this fragile situation, but peace must conclude with all of Georgia’s land remaining rightfully there’s. Russia voluntarily chose to violently invade Georgia’s territory, and by doing, must now suffer the consequences on a world stage.
Canada supports the democratic and legitimate government of Georgia. Russia is obligated to fulfill its international duties, and reconsider its past actions in order to cooperate fully with the international community. It must make strides to resolve this crisis with Georgia in a peaceful manner. This issue is not a matter of discussion or even consideration. A country has no justification for invasion because “they have a large population of there people living there.” This excuse is a poor one; Canada would be condemned if they were to invade the United States because they had a large population there. Russia has no legitimate claim to Georgia’s land, and this matter needs to be quickly and peacefully resolved.
Russia is too large of a player to be shunned on the world stage. There participation in the world’s economy and crisis for the most part are beneficial to all. However, to create a more facile situation for all, Russia must settle this dispute in a peaceful manner.
