On the day of August 7th, 2008, armed conflict erupted between the countries of Russia and Georgia over a considerably unnecessary territory dispute. While the area under topic is officially part of Georgia, the citizens contain extensive ties between both countries. Russia claims that South Ossetian. the area over dispute has a high determination to be a part of the Russian federation and that the Georgia republic has begun to use artillery to kill 1,600 of their own South Ossetian citizens.
While, Georgia claims that The Russian federation has invaded the substantial borders of Georgia and that they themselves have the right to deal with their own federal issues without the interruption of Russian forces. Portugal however fully supports Georgia in these situations. The people of Portugal would like to see a peaceful and lasting solution to this ongoing situation. We , are hoping to see a resolution come forth that involves keeping full respects for the principles of territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty. Portugal stresses a specific urgency of a swift, complete and good implementation agreement to a resolution concerning these issues. We however are greatly concerned by the residing humanitarian situation.
The loss of life, civilian casualties, and damage to property is in our greatest of concerns. Portugal feels that we first and foremost must ensure the civilians affected by this conflict that they will gain the assistance needed to meet future and present humanitarian necessities. Portugal would like to reinstate that we are in complete support of Georgia in this situation. Georgia's security, recovery, stability, and future are all important to the country of Portugal.
Portugal is willing to cooperate in the framework of the partnership for peace, and would like to see growth and rehabilitation of the economic reconstruction of Georgia. Portugal will continue to take action in an intensive engagement in these situations until a peaceful resolution can thus be concluded.
