The caucus region has been fought and argued over by the people of it’s lands ever since the area left the Soviet Union. August 7, 2008 proved to show that an escalation of violence is not uncommon. Violence began between Russian and Georgian troops over the caucus region. The Russian government validates their actions by stating that Georgian troops were using inhumane tactics and methods to remove South Ossetians from the area. Meanwhile Georgia claims that Russian troops crossed over the Georgian borders unprovoked and without validation. The Georgian government also states that they’re diplomatic discussions with Abkhazia and South Ossetia are their business and other countries should not attempt to interfere. The disputes between who fired the first shot and who is in the wrong simply escalated the violence more quickly. On August 14, 2008 the countries settled on a peace plan that has to date been debated. Even after attempts to end violence and cease disputes, civilian violence is still common.
Saudi Arabia respects the ability for countries to have privacy in their own diplomatic discussions. Although, after violence became a factor, the countries need to be stopped before the situation elevated. Since this did not occur, we believe that the next step should be to find a solution that has points that both the Russian and Georgian governments will find appeasing. As a solution is found, there should be a strong factor that will keep each country on par with the ideas that they agreed to. Security is needed to keep the civilian groups from continuing their violence. This will include peace agreements, and a solution to ease tensions between the neighboring countries. As helpful as security may be, aid will be required to keep this type of situation from occurring in the near future.
Hopefully all of the countries that see one or both sides as in the wrong will support Saudi Arabia’s prospected ideas for change within the Caucus region. Even the countries that are non-aligned should feel the need for peace in the region. This will also need to come along with the ability for the countries to act in their own responsible fashions.
Saudi Arabia has not singed any official papers relative to the situation, as we are not a directly affected country. We believe that countries have the right to set the limits of freedom to the levels seen fit by the government leaders. Even with this position, Saudi Arabia does not see any country as fit to destroy it’s honor by taking another country into respect under it’s own laws.
