Clean, accessible water is an essential component of the world we desire to live in. But millions of people from around the world die each year due to diseases associated with inadequate water supply, hygiene, and sanitation. 11% of the world’s population continue to be without access to clean drinking water , according to the Millennium Development Goals Report 2012. The United Nations has long been addressing this global issue of access to safe water to satisfy basic human needs. This global crisis calls for the unification of all nations to put an end to the lost lives and countries impaired from this problem.
The Netherlands takes a strong stance on this issue. As a nation who has already contributed to water management worldwide, we have accomplished many goals and helped aid many countries in need of help. For example, in Bangladesh 38 million people have been given information on the importance of good hygiene through a project funded by the Netherlands and run by the NGO BRAC. The Netherlands has focused on transborder water management by working in 7 international basins in Africa, Asia, and The Middle East. To accomplish these goals, The Netherlands cooperates with international financial institutions, for instance, the World Bank.
Holland intends to continue providing organizations and projects with financial aid. The Netherlands feels it is important to obtain a list of set goals for the future that the nations of the world can work towards.Also, The Netherlands expects to find support from nearby European countries.
