Algeria is firmly committed to ensuring peace and democracy for all people throughout the African continent and the world. It is only through democratic reforms that Africa can realize its potential as a world leader. With this belief in mind, it is absolutely necessary that peace and democracy be created in the Congo. Algeria is already committed to bringing this change about, and it is with a newfound zeal that we encourage the rest of the world to take a genuine interest in this issue.
Through our involvement in the African Union, we have committed troops to the preservation of peace in the Congo. In addition to our involvement in the African Union, Algeria hosted the Organization of African Unity Conference in the year 2000 in which we were instrumental in bringing both Ethiopia and Eritrea to the point where they would engage in meaningful and productive peace talks. Algeria is committed to bringing a lasting peace to the African continent.
While our democracy was in its infancy, Algeria experienced some setbacks in our continual struggle to instill a permanent democracy in our own country. Our most recent elections (in 2004) were a tremendous success and offer hope that democracy can thrive in our own country, and in Africa as a whole. Because of our experience in transition to a democracy, we can aid the region of the Congo in their quest to achieve a truly democratic state.
