The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is deeply concerned by the crisis unfolding in the Congo. While the Congolese people have experienced numerous internal conflicts in the past decade, we feel that the intervention of outside forces, primarily Western imperialist nations, such as the United States, can only lead to further strife. The history of our own peninsula can be used as an example.
After the intervention of the United States after World War II, the despicable Syngman Rhee was placed at the head of the government. The imperialist aggressors, lead by Washington, manipulated the United Nations to their own ends and eventually made Rhee’s position an elected one, imposing their limited form of democracy upon our great nation. Rhee maintained control of the government, and in fact cemented it. During his reign, he repressed the great Communist ideologies of Marx and Lenin, and tortured or marginalized those who defended them. This eventually led to the division of our nation which persists today, causing tensions in the region.
The Glorious Democratic People’s Republic of Korea proposes that before international intervention is twisted toward the interests of outside nations, and capitalist democracy is imposed completely upon the citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a referendum should be held, one which would allow the Congolese people to select their own form of government. If they choose capitalist democracy, then so be it. The DPRK has no desire to oppose the wishes of any nation’s population with regards to their government or economy; to do so would be a violation of their national sovereignty. However, different actions must be taken if they select an alternate form of government. Furthermore, UN peacekeepers ought not to be dispatched to “safeguard” this referendum, as the presence of outside military forces will only lead to more violence.
