Nuclear weapons have been the source of most major power plays in the last half-century. While only a select few states have the capabilities and the monetary resources to construct these monstrous weapons, the vast majority of them have peaceful systems. When, however, such a nation does arise, that has the monetary resources and scientific capability, combined with the mind-frame necessary to use these weapons, the world is in danger. The government of the Republic of the Congo can say with certainty that unless action is taken to remove nuclear capabilities from the hands of the Democratic Republic of Korea, the world will remain in danger. The nations of the African Union have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferaton Treaty; signifying their intent to stop the production of nuclear weapons and oppose the creation of new programs. As a member of the African Union and with our President as its leader, we firmly establish our position against the Democratic Republic of Korea’s use of nuclear technology. The fact is, countries establish nuclear programs for one of two purposes; the first, to create a weapons program to be used in defense and to end a war contains the P5 and a few other nations. The second is to bring itself onto the playing field of the nuclear nations. When the Democratic Republic of Korea did not have a nuclear program, the majority of the nations of the world did not pay much attention to it. The people were being starved and poorly treated, but only when a nuclear program was created was the Democratic Republic of Korea brought to the international arena. Only when Kim Jong Il created a weapon of mass destruction did the major powers of the world take him seriously. This climate that we live in which creates an atmosphere of competition and distrust has caused the price of respect to rise to nuclear levels. We as nations of the world must contain, reduce, and destroy the nuclear programs of countries such as the Democratic Republic of Korea and protect our earth from catastrophe, for it is the only one that we have.
