The Republic of Cuba is incredibly concerned with the crisis that is unfolding in the Congo. Human deaths on such a large scale are unacceptable and action obviously must be taken to prevent further loss of life. However, building dependence on the international community is not the answer. The region is incredibly unstable now, and it will continue to be if we send numerous international troops and peacekeepers into the area. The Democratic Republic of Congo will continue to rely on the international community to sustain the peace, and they will become a burden to us all. Congo needs to build and support a government themselves, we are in no position to enter the region and demand a government from it.
The Republic of Cuba believes that it is in the United Nations best interest to support the standing government in the Congo. Cuba urges the international community to recognize their places in the situation. While Cuba does not disregard a request for international involvement, Cuba calls upon the nations to recognize that stability does not always come through international force.
Cuba also calls upon the United Nations to uphold the nation’s sovereignty and to build upon it. As members of the United Nations and the international community it is our duty to provide sovereignty to all nations. In bringing stability to the Democratic Republic of Congo, we must build up the Congolese government to a point that it is capable of supporting itself. Just as all other nations, The Republic of Cuba wishes to see peace overwhelm the region once again. Cuba is willing to work with all nations in pursuit of a peaceful end to this crisis.
