The ongoing conflict in the democratic republic on Congo is and has been a terrible one. It has led to the deaths of over five million four hundred thousand people. The main reason for the conflict is to gain control of sustainable natural resources in the country such as diamonds, copper, zinc, and coltan. In Ituri, MONUC has proven it was unable to contain the numerous militia and groups driving the Ituri conflict. This war has been the deadliest since World War II.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan believes firmly that the conflict cannot go on for much longer. The death tolls are too high. NGO participation needs to increase, as well as the amount of peacekeeping troops stationed by the UN. Decisions about containing strategy and border patrols shall be discussed and decided by the UN. Only with these actions taken will the situation in the Congo die down, and peace be restored.

The NGO Amnesty International should partner up with the UN to help efforts in the DRC. They are appealing to the UN Security Council to urgently reinforce the UN peacekeeping force in the DRC and give it all the necessary support to enable it to fulfill its mandate to protect citizens. The organization is also calling for high-level international pressure on the DRC and Rwanda to resolve their differences and to use their influence over armed groups to halt the slide towards greater bloodshed. The organization also called for the Security Council to step up pressure on armed groups to halt all attacks against civilians and to immediately release all children associated with their forces as well as women and girls held as sexual slaves.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan believes that the initiations of these requests are for the betterment of the situation in the DRC. Only if actions are taken, will the killing and violations against human rights end. Special consideration should be given to the children involved in the conflict. Although children make up only 19% of the population, they account for 47% of the deaths. The UN should team up with Amnesty International to end this bloody conflict.
