Afghanistan has long been a nation ravaged by war. Even today, violence continues throughout the borders of our great nation. We have seen what war can do to a country, its economy, and its people. In light of the recent situation in Georgia, Afghanistan is prepared to do whatever it takes to achieve stability and start rebuilding. It is certainly a messy situation, and many accusations have been made with regards to the cause. However we believe that all this blame is doing nothing, and that we must start helping those in need, and resolving any conflict that has arisen.
The first step in the long road to recovery is properly identifying the damage that has been done. It is necessary that we get an accurate measure of what has happened, so that we can start to fix it. There have been many different and sometimes contradictory reports on the damage to the Georgian region of South Ossetia, and the veracity of these claims must be tested. Only after we have assessed the damage will we be able to proceed.
Next, appropriate aid should be administered to the people in need. The United Nations cannot sit around idly while people do not have their basic needs met, and so we must act swiftly to resolve these issues. This, in Afghanistan’s point of view, is the most important issue at this time. Though it will be necessary to decide the future of the region, both in terms of land disputes and conflict among countries, presently the biggest concern is human rights, and reasonable living conditions for all those injured and force d out of their homes during the conflict.
It is obvious that South Ossettia is a hotly disputed region, and something must be done regarding its sovereignty and recognition as a country. Though currently it is part of the state of Georgia, it is under Russian Control. This obviously poses problems for everyone, and we must truly discern the nature of the small piece of land. It would be useful to know the entire back story and history of the conflict between Georgia, Russia, and South Ossetia.
While Afghanistan agrees that something must be done regarding with regards to the ownership of South Ossetia, the most important thing at the moment is to help those in need. Only after we ascertain who needs are help, and provide aid to those who do, we cannot rightfully make any other decisions. We must first help the people on the ground, and the go about deciding the fate of the region.
