The issue of the disputed territories in Georgia is a difficult and complex issue to tackle. However, the Republic of Angola feels that whatever solution is made on the issue, it is imperative that the sovereignty of Georgia be maintained. The right to sovereignty is a basic and essential right for all nations, so there is no reason why that right should be disregarded in the case of Georgia. While Russia may have had noble intentions in helping regions of Georgia that may have had their interests violated by the Georgian government, it should not have violated Georgia’s territorial integrity. Either a direct in invasion into Georgia, in the way that it did, or by agitation or infiltration of paramilitary forces, Russia should not be meddling in Georgia’s internal affairs.
Georgia should have the right to use whatever force it sees fit to stop any rebellious uprising in its borders, without having to worry about answering to snooping foreign nations. The Republic of Angola believes that the September 8 Agreement is an excellent step in the correct direction. Angola greatly appreciates Russia’ cooperation and hopes that Russia will continue to cooperate with international law. However, Angola believes that precautionary measures should be taken to ensure that the issue does not escalate into war once more, and to prevent Russia from muscling its way into Georgia the way that it has done in the past. The ultimate goal in the region is peace.
The Republic of Angola would like to work to achieve this end, so that the bloodshed is stopped and future conflict avoided.
