Armed conflict erupted August 7th, 2008 between the Russian Federation and Georgia over a territory dispute. While officially part of Georgia under the borders which existed when Georgia abandoned the USSR, many of the residents of the area of South Ossetia have extensive ties to Russia and carry dual passports. Russia claims that the area in dispute has a right to self determination and wishes to be part of the Russian Federation; moreover, the Russian Federation maintains that in July 2008 the military of the Georgian Republic had moved into the region and begun to use illegal and inhumane measures to suppress the region’s desire to secede including using artillery to kill 1,600 South Ossetians. Georgia claims that Russia invaded its borders without provocation, that it has a right to adjudicate internal issues including its own federal relationship with South Ossetia and Abkhazia (another region in Georgia with ties to Russia). Georgia further claims that it was not abusing international norms of human rights in South Ossetia prior to the Russian invasion. International defenders of Georgia cite the parallels between Putin/Medvedev’s Russia’s actions in 2008 and Hitler’s actions in claiming the Sudetenland in 1937.
We in the nation of Eritrea believe that war is hurtful to a nation’s economy, agriculture, and the nation’s people as a whole. A war is not good for a country it puts stress on a countries relationship with its people, War should be avoided at all costs because it hurt innocent people just as much as it does the government.
The situation in Georgia is horrible all of the wars that are taking place in a small country like are creating destitute people that cannot afford food and water that is why the country of Georgia is in the situation that it is in now. War is killing the economy along with the countries people. No matter how short a war is it still can be very dangerous for an economy. With Georgia’s already failing economy war is not helping a thing. You can tell that this country is in horrible shape they are in a food crisis as of right now because of all of the war and problems that are plaguing the country.
