The recent invasion in August of this year by the Russian Federation’s military into the Georgian territory of South Ossetia due to Georgian forces bombarding the area, is an incident that has caused unrest through the international community. Georgia now faces economic instability due to the conflict, as well as numerous civilian casualties. While Russian troops have withdrawn due to the regulations of an EU ceasefire agreement, some still remain within Georgian territory. The Republic of India believes that the international community needs an immediate call for stability and peace through out the region of Georgia and its territories.
The Republic of India feels the international community needs to act upon the humanitarian crisis, and areas that have remained cut off from aid should be high priority in a humanitarian aid effort put forth by this body. One of the more pressing issues this body needs to address still is that of the creation of innumerable internationally displaced persons (IDPs) that have yet to return home.
The Republic of India feels the peace talks can be used as a method to help end the conflict between all involved parties and reconcile. There has been discussion of upcoming peace talks in December after a ceasefire agreement on both sides, with an EU moderator. The Republic of India hopeful for the future of the peace talks, hoping all involved can come to a general consensus. While the conflict remains an internal land dispute between Georgia and its territories, while Georgia remains inviting to the international community to make an effort in solving conflict, this body must ensure Georgia’s right to a sovereign state. Peacekeepers to secure the borders must remain unbiased, and prove to benefit all.
The Republic of India expresses its true hopes for a quick and peaceful resolution of the conflict, with the hopeful outlook on the up and coming peace talks.
