Sri Lanka expresses concern for anyone affected by war. Our country has long been fighting the brutal terrorists of the LTTE and we sympathize with anyone who has ever experienced such conflict. While we stay neutral, we must urge both sides to make peace and resolve their differences. We also express the need for the global community to band together to fight for peace and help one another in their times of need. No one truly benefits from war, peace is the only option and Sri Lanka is willing to work with the rest of the world to help achieve it.
Sri Lanka is not directly affected by the situations in Georgia, but any threat to peace affects the whole world. We cannot sit idle and watch passively while innocent civilians are dying. My country, and myself, applaud the humanitarian efforts that have been so successful, but more direct action must be taken to strike at the heart of the problem. Resolutions must be passed to solve these crises, and Sri Lanka intends to help pass those resolutions to the best of our ability.
Sri Lanka wishes to remain as neutral as possible, and instead of passing around the blame, work on correcting the problems at hand. The global community must come together and decide quickly on a strategy to end the conflict in Georgia. Reports show that at least 182 Georgians have died in the current invasion by Russia. If the conflict doesn’t end soon who knows how high the numbers will rise.
Sri Lanka understands that Russia and Georgia have a history of conflict, but wishes to stress the necessity to end the fighting. Russia must make peace, and Georgia must be willing to come to an agreement. Russia’s military forces must be removed as soon as possible. Sri Lanka wishes that in addition to these resolutions, international laws should be put in place so that no similar problems arise.
Sri Lanka believes that needy people in Georgia should receive aid, but we are in no position to offer any. Our current issue with the Tamil Tigers occupies our military and we cannot give foreign aid as we are currently receiving over one hundred million US dollars a year. Those that can give should, and although we have little, we will try and set up trade arrangements with Georgia that lower tariffs.
Sri Lanka has not released any official statements on the issues in Georgia, but is still watching and making decisions regarding the issues. We will keep watching and trying to help resolve the issues, but we wish to remain neutral and help all sides involved.
