As you already know, armed conflict erupted on August 7, 2008 between the Russian federation and Georgia over a territory of disputed rule. Although South Ossetia and Abkhazian, the areas in dispute, lie under Georgian borders, which existed when Georgia abandoned the USSR, a majority of the residents of the areas in dispute have strong ties to Russia, which include ethnic relations, and dual passports. On the topic concerning the current war in the country of Georgia, Syria gives full support to Russia, agreeing that Georgia has provoked this war with its tyrannical and controlling actions against South Ossetia, and Abkhazian. In July of 2008 the military of the Georgian Republic had moved into the region and had begun to use illegal and inhumane measures to suppress the region’s desire to secede including using artillery to kill 1,600 South Ossetians. Syria’s honorable leader, President Assad, perceives the Georgian war to be an opportunity to strengthen Russian-Syrian relations. Once again quoting that, “we are ready to cooperate with Russia on any project that will strengthen it’s security.”
The key issues that Syria would like to see addressed in the Committee, would be as follows. Our honorable country would like to see the issue of the independence of South Ossetia, and Abkhazian fully examined and reviewed . Also, we would like to advise that while you examine the topic that you once again look at the amount of suppression and inhumane actions that Georgia has taken against South Ossetia and Abkhazian. Another issue not to overlook is the fact of ethnic relation that both South Ossetia and Abkhazian have to Russia and not Georgia. And finally, we all must consider the vital importance of being on respectable terms with other countries in the world, so as to prevent future wars. In the best interest of South Ossetia, and Abkhazian, we propose a solution to this problem. Our solution is a newly formed independent country that would have close relation to Russia, being there closest in ethnic and past relation.
We have allied ourselves with Russia because of our firm beliefs on the subject and to involuntarily gain amiable relations between ourselves and Russia.
Back in the year of 2006 from August 20th to August 21st our honorable president Bashar al-Assad visited the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi at the invitation of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Assad last visited Russia in late 2006, when he met with then Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At the beginning of their Sochi meeting, Medvedev greeted Assad by remarking that,"We are grateful to Syria for its support on issues related to the well-known recent conflict with Georgia which committed an act of aggression against South Ossetia."Assad responded that, "we wish to once again express our support for the Russian position as regards to the recent conflict and the general situation around Abkhazia and South Ossetia. We agree with the essence of the Russian position and understand the military reaction to the events that took place; we consider this to be a reaction to provocation by Georgia".He reaffirmed Syria's support for Russia and said his country would oppose "any attempt to tarnish Russia's reputation or misrepresent it's position, which in this situation is both logical and explicable."
