The current issue facing the United Nations Special Political Committee, is the Stability in the Caucuses region. In particular the sovereignty of the great nation of Georgia. On August 7th, 2008. Russian Federation troops without warning or cause began a fast paced military push into Georgia. Using all there military power they easily crushed the defenseless Georgian troops. They continued into the regions of South Ossetia, and Abkhazia. This violent surge continued for several days. The Russian Federation used all means necessary to destroy any resistance to there path. Using tanks to advance quickly into the cities where civilians were not ready or warned. In addition to that the Russian Federation bombed airports and military targets. They then ceased there actions. Agreeing to a Six Point Plan drawn up to promote peace and restore order. Then within days the Russian Federation deliberately violated the treaty and began to move further south. This acts are a cause for great alarm. Nations in the area of Georgia are voicing there concerns that the Russian Federation is returning to its old self. With all that there came more reports of violence. This however was ethnic violence. Reports began surfacing that the Russians had been committing acts of Genocide. This is the current issue we face. This is not an issue of land or power, but an issue of peace and democracy. The Georgians deserve the right a sovereign state. By the Russian Federation invading they have compromised that right and are therefor in the wrong.
The United States of America has investigated this issue and analyzed ever aspect of the issue and we have come up with the following ideas to solve this issue. The United States has concluded that in order to restore peace to the region we must eliminate all Russian Federation military presence. In other words the Russians must withdraw there troops all the way to there boarders. Secondly we advise talks between the two nations. During these talks we hope that they can confront one another on exactly what is bothering them and therefor solve it. We also propose a treaty or document that places a punishment for any further military actions from ether side. Thus creating at peaceful foundation from which we can rebuild the nation of Georgia and restore peace to the region. We also suggest that if Russia does not follow the terms placed in the treaty, that they be denied World Trade Organization membership. Also we would like those nations involved to consider the addition of Georgia to NATO, as well as the EU.
In order for this idea of peace to become a reality we hope that all nations involved will submit any and all ideas to this committee so that we may solve this issue swiftly and diplomatically. This is an issue that will define both nations history and we hope that all involved realize they importance of this issue. Thank you all, I look forward to solving this issue.
