Regarding the current situation in the Korean peninsula, the United Kingdom strongly condemns the recent unprovoked attacks initiated by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea against peaceful troops from the Republic of Korea. This conflict is a considerable threat to international peace. Despite an armistice dating back to 1953, tensions between these two countries have been high for numerous years. This is why the United Kingdom supports the South Korean military forces, and additional UN forces that may be required to solve this issue. In addition to this, the United Kingdom supports economic sanctions, and the disarmament of all nuclear warheads in the possession of the North Korean government.
The support that the United Kingdom has shown for South Korea is as strong, if not stronger, now than it was when we stood with the United States of America in contributing troops to the Korean conflict back in 1950-1953. Our soldiers involved then numbered 58000, a number that should reflect the support we gave then, and believe in to this day.
Although the North Korean response to objections over the fresh assault have not expressed an intention to resolve the conflict diplomatically, the United Kingdom supports the proposal from Turkey for a summit of historically involved nations as a measure to diplomatically solve this problem. Diplomacy should be the first defense against warfare, and the United Kingdom will participate in suggested negotiations. Should these efforts fail however, the United Kingdom fully supports further economic sanctions and military action against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
