From the start of the Somali civil war in 1991 to today in 2011, the United Nations have worked to bring peace to this war torn nation. Several attempts to restore peace were failures, most noticeable the United Nations Operations in Somalia (UNOSOM). In 2004, the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) was established. The goal of the TFG was to bring long lasting peace to the country and restore a form of government to benefit the people. Due to the Islamic Tribunals, the Transitional Federal Government was overthrown in 2006, bringing negotiations to a halt. With the constant threat of Islamic militants and political strife, the Security Council created the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISON) allowing political negotiations to continue
Canada is very involved in the global fight to return Somalia to a peaceful nation. Canada recently donated $50 million in aid to the thousands of Somali people forced from their homes due to the violence. To further help the citizens of Somalia, Canada has provided military assistance and training to many soldiers serving in the African Union Mission in Somalia. The recent declaration of famine in Somalia has led the country of Canada and its people to donate over $20 million to the those affected by this crisis.
Canada can only ask that other countries join the cause and save Somalia from its position of violence and despair. This is a matter of human injustice and cruelty that must be resolved. By working together, the countries of the world can aid those that are struggling and forge lasting political and moral bonds.
