In 1991 Somalia was plunged into civil war among warring factions within the country. As a direct result of this, the people of Somalia have suffered immensely. With a damaged agricultural system, food is scare and starvation is a very real danger for much of the populace. Previous attempts have been made by the United Nations in order to help aid the people of Somalia, but they have failed to make any long term impact. As one of the most dangerous areas in the world, the people of Somalia are in grave danger each and every day. Lebanon believes that certain steps must be taken in order to provide security for these people.
Lebanon is fully committed to helping the people of Somalia. We believe that above all else, the people should be our top priority. Lebanon has already shown our commitment to helping the people of Somalia in their time of need. Lebanon sent over thirty-three thousand kilograms of food in addition to two point five tons of medical supplies last August. It is Lebanon's hope that these supplies are put to their best use in aiding the Somalian people. But this is just a short term solution. In order to help the Somalian people in the long-run, a stable government must be created. With the current extension of the Transitional Federal Government, Lebanon believes that this is the perfect time to try to assist them in establishing a permanent government. With a more permanent government, Lebanon hopes that the people of Somalia will be better cared for.
Lebanon knows the pain that results from civil war, having had our own not too long ago, and Lebanon wishes to help the Somalian people end this conflict as soon as possible. Along with our allies, Lebanon hopes to bring about a quick and decisive end to the troubles in Somalia.
