Globally, there are lots of people suffering from a lack of or absence of healthcare. Innocent people lose their lives everyday because they can't afford private health care. Lives of these people can be saved with the establishment of universal health care. Brazil feels that it is most definitely a human right.
Brazil thinks that health care should be available to all citizens so matter what their economic standing in society. Free health care will not be denied to anyone. We believe that if a nation is fully committed to the idea that health care is in fact a human right, then it is most definitely achievable. Brazil has been very successful in having our universal health care system. We have achieved this success with a combination of both the SUS and an abundance of financial assistance from various sources. Taxes and private investments fund most of our programs. And while we do give citizens the opportunity to opt for private insurance, only about 25% of them do. 100% of our population has the opportunity to take advantage of our universal health care system.
With proper planning and funding, Brazil feels that universal health care should be a right in all countries. While we are aware that it is expensive, we do not believe that that is enough reason to deny citizens such an important human right. Brazil understands that not all countries will be able to invest as much as others into such a system, but feels that nations need to at least be willing to try their best. Healthcare is a human right and should be achievable to everyone in the world. We believe that every country should set minimum health care standards and stick by them.
