The suffering of the Palestinian people has long been a source of distress for Afghanistan. Our brothers and sisters in Palestine have suffered far too long, and Afghanistan believes that now is the time to recognize them in the community of nations. It is the firm belief of Afghanistan that Palestine be granted full statehood, as well as full membership in the United Nations.
Afghanistan believes that it is time for the Israeli occupation of Palestine to end. Innocent Palestinians are killed every day. In 2012 alone, 6622 Palestinians were killed, 6569 by Israeli security forces, and 53 by Israeli civilians. However, Afghanistan accepts that Palestinian terrorists have killed 1097 Israeli civilians and security forces. (Israeli Information Center for Human Rights) However, Afghanistan does not believe that the Palestinian citizens be punished for crimes of terrorists.
Afghanistan disapproves of Israel for refusal to enter negotiations with Palestine, and is using the “Peace Process” as an excuse for inaction, delay, and avoidance of any substantive resolution of the issues dividing the two parties. Afghanistan believes that Israel’s complete denial of the possibility of a Palestinian state is counterproductive. Afghanistan believes that talks need to be started between Palestine and Israel in order to take the first step towards peace in the region. Afghanistan also believes that the Palestinian Authority should be recognized as a government, both by the global community, and Israel, to create peace.
Afghanistan hopes that the nations of this committee can work closely together, to begin peace talks, and to guarantee statehood for Palestine. Afghanistan looks forward to working with all nations to hopefully resolve this important issue.
