I am honored to representing the Republic of Indonesia in UN General Assembly debate to discuss the Palestinian homeland. From the perspective of Indonesia, there is no question on the issue of statehood. The Zionist entity has violated human rights in almost every scenario and to that end; it is the natural right of the Palestinian people to their own self determination.
As with any issue, in order to fully understand it we must first look to past action. The UN has previously tried negotiations but they have only led to the humanitarian crisis which we see today. It is with this past in mind that Indonesia advocates for a different future; with greater emphasis on nation building. The UN has seen its greatest successes in response to humanitarian crisis to that end; we see the UN future role in this crisis as a nation builder.
Indonesia also advocates that individual nations support the plight of our Palestinian brothers. As a staunch supporter of Palestine, Indonesia has often expressed its commitment to helping prepare the establishment of Palestine’s state by providing capacity building programs for Palestinians. In July 2008, Indonesia hosted a New Asian African Strategic Partnership (NAASP) Ministerial Conference on Capacity Building for Palestine. Participants of the meeting agreed to provide training programs for 10,000 Palestinians within a five-year period, from 2008 to 2013.
The solution we offer was most elegantly stated by his Excellency Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa during the 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in Tehran, Iran, last August: "The cause of our brothers and sisters in Palestine is the cause of the NAM. It is also Indonesia’s cause. We must, therefore, take concrete and vigorous steps to ensure that Palestine’s bid for enhanced status in the United Nations succeeds this year. We must also see to it that the establishment of a Palestine state in 2013, as envisioned by Palestinian leaders, is realized.”
We the Republic of Indonesia pray that one day our Palestinian brothers will be free.
